GLOBIO contains a cause-effect relationship between 12 classes of land use and MSA.
MSA values are based on data sets comparing measured species abundance between at least one land use type and primary vegetation. A linear mixed effect model was fitted to the data.
For forest biomes 68 studies, comprising 71 datasets, are used. Most studies were from the tropical forest biome, but available studies from other forest biomes confirm the general picture. The list of references and MSA values from each dataset can be downloaded.
For grassland biomes 21 studies were used, comprising 24 data sets. The list of references and MSA values from each dataset can be downloaded.
For urban areas no sufficient data have yet been compiled. The value 0.05 was assigned by expert opinion, representing the densely populated areas of city centers.
The impact of land use can also be expressed as the change in extent of biomes (Ecosystem extent).
